Public Talk: Urvashi Butalia – A Sense of the Past

In this talk titled A Sense of the Past, renowned feminist writer, publisher and activist Urvashi Butalia revisits her seminal book The Other Side of Silence: Voices from and the Partition of India. Over twenty years since it was first published, the talk will offer an intimate insight into the conception of this book, the questions, research and relationships that went into writing it, and reflections on what questions the author would ask today were such a book to be written.

The talk will be in English. Please RSVP.

The talk is an extension of Reading Between the Lines – a reading group co-organised by Art Jameel and Ishara Art Foundation revisiting the history of South Asia’s Partition through narratives that complicate the idea of political and cartographic borders by attending to stories of internal social partitions around gender, caste and language. The public talk happens in connection with the exhibition Proposals for a Memorial to Partition, curated by Murtaza Vali.
