Public Programmes Coordinator

Job Description

The Public Programmes Coordinator will lead on researching, planning and delivering a rich and diverse public programme at the Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai. Working across departments, including with Learning, Collections and Exhibitions, the role will create exciting and innovative opportunities for the public to engage with and learn about artists, artworks and ideas – including (but not limited to) talks, workshops, tours and happenings. This is a public facing role with the expectation of engaging with invited contributors and participants in a public setting.

Responsibilities and Duties

Programme Development  

  • Research and develop public programmes that interrogate and open up ideas around exhibitions and the curatorial concerns of the Jameel Arts Centre at large
  • Devise innovative, engaging and original programming — from content to format and hosting and delivery – that enables learning experiences and deeper engagement for a broad public, from artists and artworld insiders to first-time museum visitors
  • Contribute to the strategy, planning and execution of year-round festivals, performances and programmes at the Jameel Arts Centre and Jaddaf Waterfront Sculpture Park
  • Work closely with the Head of Learning and Youth Assembly curator to develop events around the Youth Assembly annual thematic and support in putting together the annual Youth Takeover
  • Work closely with the Head of Collections and Collections team to develop innovative events that support current and future programmes, creating a greater understanding and connection to the Art Jameel Collection (Collection-focused exhibitions, Artist’s Garden, symposiums, site specific commissions and park commissions)
  • Collaborate with external partners on the development of programming, including international symposia, talks, and workshops
  • Contribute to crafting a public programmes strategy that situates the Jameel Arts Centre as a site for the arts and learning, accessible to all   
  • Represent Art Jameel at events across the UAE, including attending talks, conferences, performances and workshops
  • Liaise with and support the strategy and marketing departments in reaching out to and  engaging broad audiences; strive to turn first-time visitors and museum newbies into regular attendees

Production

  • Liaise with relevant team members and departments, such as operations and maintenance, to ensure the smooth set up and running of events 
  • Liaise with AV teams and external suppliers as needed prior to and during the event
  • Liaise with speakers, including the drafting of speakers’ letters, and the arrangement of accommodation and travel
  • Build a database of local, regional and international contacts across the humanities, arts and sciences, both within and outside of academic contexts
  • Write copy and other promotional materials for websites, press listings and social media as needed
  • Maintain an orderly filing system
  • Log and upkeep budgets related to specific programmes
  • Process finance related paperwork in a timely, organised and efficient manner

Additional responsibilities 

  • Provide guided tours to visitor groups as requested
  • Support Welcome Desk (front of house) with assigned shifts
  • Be a committed player in and supporter of the local arts scene, working to further links between Art Jameel and other cultural entities, partners and individuals
  • Help build out and maintain the database of event attendees, collaborators and key stakeholders
  • Assist in hosting artists, curators and invited practitioners and on occasion, join the senior team in representing Art Jameel at dinners and other such events
