Join us for a three day masterclass, reimagining the possibilities of time, space, and materiality through exploring the historical fresco technique. Drawing inspiration from centuries-old processes, Chafa Ghaddar introduces the physical, chemical, and emotional dimensions of fresco, tracing its journey from ancient origins to contemporary interpretations. Through a blend of theoretical discussion and tactile exercises, this three-part programme invites you to examine how bodies and elements are held within and around surfaces, and to experiment with the concept of the fragment as a site for creative inquiry.
Guided by Chafa Ghaddar, the masterclass unfolds across three sessions:
Session 1: Fresco as Trace
Begin with a theoretical exploration of fresco, delving into its making, history, and transformation over time. Through lectures and presentations, participants uncover how fresco operates as both process and metaphor, mapping its evolution from classical to modern contexts. Group exercises encourage collective reflection, inviting you to write from the perspective of fresco itself, contemplating its relationship to time and space.
Session 2: The Fragment
Shift from theory to practice with hands-on activities centred on the concept of the fragment, inspired by the giornata; the daily segment of work in fresco painting. Participants experiment with printing, dotting, and assembling techniques, questioning the boundaries of surface, shape, and reference. This session emphasises tactile learning, fostering a deeper understanding of how fragments can be both limitation and possibility.
Session 3: Ecosystem
Conclude with a collaborative inquiry into the ecosystem of elements created throughout the course. Through group readings, discussions, and a collective landscape exercise, participants observe how individual fragments interact; supporting, clashing, or coexisting in new configurations. The session culminates in a group writing activity, weaving together observations and texts into a shared poetic reflection.
No prior art experience is required, and all materials are provided. This masterclass is open to adults aged 18+, offering an opportunity to engage deeply with traditional techniques while expanding the boundaries of contemporary creative practice.
