Artist Led Sessions with Chafa Ghaddar: Trace, Fragment, Ecosystem

Join us for a two day masterclass, reimagining the possibilities of time, space, and materiality through exploring the historical fresco technique. Drawing inspiration from centuries-old processes, Chafa Ghaddar introduces the physical, chemical, and emotional dimensions of fresco, tracing its journey from ancient origins to contemporary interpretations. Through a blend of theoretical discussion and tactile exercises, this two-part programme invites you to examine how bodies and elements are held within and around surfaces, and to experiment with the concept of the fragment as a site for creative inquiry.

Session Breakdown:

  • Session 1: The day begins with an introductory lecture on the fresco technique, exploring its chemical, physical, and historical aspects, alongside the concept of the giornata, or a day’s labour in fresco terms. Participants will delve into the idea of the “fragment” – questioning whether it represents a limitation of space, time, or the body, and considering its size, shape, colour, and origins, whether from existing drawings or invention. The session includes reading and writing exercises to deepen this reflection. Following this, participants will learn the dotting technique and begin creating their own fragments. The day concludes with a collective assembly of these fragments, during which the group will assess and critique the work together, fostering critical observation and dialogue.
  • Session 2: Building on the previous day’s foundation, the morning starts with a refresher lecture on fresco, giornata, and fragments, before introducing the technique of printing with lace. Participants will apply this method to construct new fragments, while continuing with writing exercises to articulate their evolving understanding. The focus shifts towards exploring how individual fragments coexist within a wider ecosystem: do they support or clash, complement or isolate? In the final session, the group assembles the collective work, reflecting on how the arrangement expresses a mental and poetic landscape shaped by their shared exploration. The day ends with a group critique and discussion, encouraging collaborative thinking and deeper critical engagement.

No prior art experience is required, and all materials are provided. This masterclass is open to adults aged 18+, offering an opportunity to engage deeply with traditional techniques while expanding the boundaries of contemporary creative practice.
