  • Artist Talk: Walid Al Wawi

The Jameel Library hosts Walid Al Wawi for a talk about his practice and research leading up to his 2018 project, Embassy of Unofficial Palestine (EOUP).

EOUP is a paper architecture installation that proposes a hypothetical organisation that works on providing relief for Palestinian Refugees residing outside of the PLO mandates or UNRWA jurisdiction. Hosted within a structure that mixes the iconography of the Dome of the Rock with the mechanism of parachuting in an architectural image that identifies its purpose as a body of aid to Palestinians.

EOUP was commissioned by The Qattan Art Foundation for Young Artist of the Year Award, 2018.

Walid Al Wawi

Born 1988, Walid Al Wawi is a Jordanian Palestinian-native, concerned with the contemporary hybridisation of the Middle Eastern identity and the implication of it’s geo-political claustrophobia upon cultural naturalisation.

Walid’s practice manifests in forms of painting, performance, video and installation, he received critical acclaim for his purest treatment of objects and documentation that dialogue with one’s political and cultural identity.

In 2017 he obtained his masters degree in the Fine Arts at Central Saint Martins College of Art, London, and co-founded Samt, one of the first virtual gallery spaces to strictly deal with the political Middle East through Anonymous Contributions as well as provide a mentorship program for artists. The previous iteration of Samt was hosted by the Tate Modern as part of their Tate Exchange program.
