Join us for the exhibition opening of ‘Second Hand’, the first group exhibition at Jameel Arts Centre, drawn from the Art Jameel Collection. The exhibition brings together works from the Art Jameel Collection that explore materiality in contemporary art practice. Focusing on different modes of expression through sculpture, installation, assemblage, drawing, photography, painting and performance, the artworks challenge the way we perceive material and our understanding of what the material represents.
‘Second Hand’ includes works by 18 artists and collectives: Adel Abdessemed, Haig Aivazian, Abbas Akhavan, Diana Al-Hadid, Doa Aly, Fayçal Baghriche, Walead Beshty, Vikram Divecha, Jason Dodge, Zahrah Al-Ghamdi, Bita Ghezelayagh, Mohammed Kazem, Azade Köker, Cinthia Marcelle, Keita Miyazaki, Slavs and Tatars, Moffat Takadiwa and Mario García Torres.
The exhibition opening is free and open to all.
Doa Aly will be performing Catatonia: A History One (Free Radicals), starting at 7:00 pm in Gallery 1.
Catatonia: A History One is inspired by the symptoms of catatonic schizophrenia. The performance explores the affective atmospheres created by fear, guilt and desire, forging an analogy between those atmospheres and catatonia, a mental disorder whose disruptive symptoms suspend appropriate affect. Catatonia: A History One is performed by Noura Seif, with an original score based on text from Daniel Paul Schreber’s Memoirs of My Nervous Illness (1903), and composed by Alaa Abdullatif.
