Poetry Workshop – Words Out of Bloom: Blackout Poetry for Sustainability

Join us in weaving together creativity and sustaining through an inspiring poetry workshop.

Hosted by Dania Dawn, Malavika Suresh and Syed Haider, participants will start by choosing a flower tied to a unique text connected to themes of sustainable living. Together, we will discuss the texts, then receive a personalized prompt inspired by your chosen flower. Using this prompt, participants will craft a blackout poem on printed copies of the text, creating a one-of-a-kind piece that breathes new life onto existing words and ideas.

Attending the workshop is free and open to all.

Dania Dawn is a multidisciplinary artist whose her craft extends to different mediums, including poetry, film and performing arts. From spoken word performances to film production, Dania explores different themes; the diaspora of self and language, art of mundaneness and the residue abandon leaves. To Dania, all art is a form of reclamation: reclamation of name, of tongue, of body—to highlight that, she creates.

Malavika Suresh is a spoken word poet and academic researcher. She studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics with a specialisation in Political Science. In her work, she explores mental health and the nuanced relationship an individual has with themselves. As a writer, she has been featured in local and international conferences, and art and literature festivals. With a passion for various forms of writing, she actively works towards blending different disciplines and practices to create holistic conversations. Malavika was a member of the 23/24 cohort of The Assembly at Jameel Arts Centre.

Syed Haider, a Pakistani multidisciplinary artist, is an award-winning poet, and the author of the book, Anyway, Don’t Be a Stranger: A Collection of Poetry & Prose’. Haider’s writing explores themes of love, grief, nostalgia, culture and identity. He blends his creativity through mediums of poetry, filmmaking, visual art and spoken word. At the heart of Haider’s expressive work is community: he hosts open mic events at The Basement in Sharjah, which continues to pave the way for artists like him to express their capabilities. Haider is a member of the 24/25 cohort of The Assembly at Jameel Arts Centre.
