Talk: ‘At the Edge of Land’ – with Sarker Protick

Marking the preview opening of ‘At the Edge of Land,’ join us for a conversation with artist Sarker Protick to hear firsthand about his participation in the group exhibition and his practice at large rooted in Bangladesh.

In dialogue with Art Jameel’s Lucas Morin, Exhibitions Curator, Protick will discuss his photographic work ‘Of River and Lost Lands’ that looks at erosion, floods and disappearing lands on the banks of the Padma River.

‘At the Edge of Land’ features works from the Art Jameel Collection together with loans and new commissions by international artists. The exhibition originated at Hayy Arts, Jeddah, and the selection of artists and artworks presented traces the trade routes on which both Dubai and Jeddah are located – the busy maritime path connecting East Asia and Europe via the Gulf, the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.

Sarker Protick’s work frequently builds the narrative around the trope of change; momentary stillness, fleeting light, elemental origins of a place and a lost home. Working with Photography, Video and Sound, Protick’s works are built on long-term surveys rooted in Bangladesh. Protick studied at the South Asian Media Institute – Pathshala in Dhaka, where he is also teaching for the last ten years. Protick is a co-curator of Chobi Mela, the longest running International Photography Festival in Asia. His work has received several recognition and fellowships, including Joop Swart Masterclass, Foam Talent, Light Work Residency, Magnum Foundation Fund, World Press Photo Award, among others.
