Workshop: Making Artworks that are not Mine to Begin With, by Majid Majidi

All welcome, pre-registration required

This programme is built around a question: What does it mean to make for someone who is not you?

This reflection is pushed through practice, inviting participants to “make without owning”, and to hold a unique voice within a space where everyone is listened to. This question is approached through textiles and design, facilitated by designer Majid Majidi, offering a way to think of trust and nonconformity as directions for collective creation.

Participants will work with a range of textiles (varying in color, texture and patterns) arranged across stations in the space. They collaboratively assemble garments through various textile techniques, including pinning, tying and draping. There is no fixed authorship. Multiple participants may work on the same piece at once, altering or extending what others have started. The process remains open, with garments continuously shifting rather than reaching a final form. Short pauses throughout the session allow participants to step back and reflect on how the pieces are developing, where tensions appear, how decisions overlap and how forms hold together or come apart. The resulting garments remain as traces of this collective process.

This programme is organised by Assembly 2025-2026 member Andres Ugartechea as part of the Youth Takeover 2026.

Majid Majidi‘s career began seven years ago in Sharjah, mastering tailoring through the local thrifting scene. That foundation in fit and construction has since evolved into a production-focused practice, overseeing manufacturing for luxury brands, hotels and F&B establishments.

Andrés Ugartechea is a multidisciplinary fine arts and interactive media artist specialising in VR and 3D sculpting. His identity factors describe him as a Mexican-American first-generation individual. Each of these aspects plays a pivotal role in shaping his concepts, centering on migration, labour and the representation of minorities.
