Workshop: You may now sleep?, by Henry Tan

All welcome, pre-registration required

You may now sleep? is an experimental workshop that investigates the politics, equity and epistemologies of sleep. Exploring the entanglements between rest and labour, it asks: Who gets to sleep? How? Where?

Participants will engage in a 4-hour stretch of sleep experiments under the guidance Henry Tan of resting under specific constraints, lighting conditions and mimicking non-human sleep patterns. Through these embodied exercises split between individual and collective work, the workshop inspires reflection on how rest is shaped by inequality and how humans have drifted from natural rhythms.

This programme is organised by the Assembly 2024-2025 member Sanjushrree Subash as part of the 2025 Youth Takeover.

Henry Tan investigates how emerging technologies like synthetic biology, mixed reality, brain stimulation and artificial intelligence blur the lines between the real and the simulated. He uses sleep as a prism to understand and investigate life, society, culture and technology. Tan creates installations, performances, songs and architecture for people to rest and reimagine their perceptions through sleep and dreams. He is a member of FREAK Lab Thailand, metaPhorest Japan and 2024 resident artist at CGSB, NYUAD.

Sanjushrree Subash is an exhibition designer and a visual artist and a member of the 2024-2025 cohort of the Assembly. Her practice explores the intersection of design with fields such as literature and anthropology, and incorporates concepts of play. Her work is inspired by the mundane and ordinary things to create immersive spaces that prompt deeper questions.
