Join us for our monthly event, Family Saturdays at the Jameel featuring a guided tour of the current exhibition and a series of hands-on art making activities for all ages.
This edition features a deep dive into our current exhibition At the Edge of Land featuring works that delve into the intricate relationships between landscapes, and tells stories that challenge ideas of emptiness and development moving between land and sea. Following the tour, families are invited to participate in a series of immersive self-led activities inspired by the exhibition works of the artists: Sarker Protick, Daniele Genardy, Sim Chi Yin, Joar Songcuya and Fazal Rizvi.
Participants gain a deep engagement with artists’ themes, mediums, and processes, and through the self-led activities learn various techniques such as watercolour resist, painting with sand, sculpting maps and drawing from memory.
The activities are free to attend and run all day to encourage and support creativity and imagination. Jameel Arts Centre strives to provide space for children to share stories, and to foster cultural awareness through artistic exploration that supports healthy child-development and growth.
Family Saturdays at the Jameel are suitable for all ages. All materials, step by step guides and instructional videos will be provided.
The tour begins at 11:00am and participants are welcome to drop by and enjoy the activities until 4:00pm.
At the Edge of Land:
Looking at port cities, shifting sands and riverbanks, ‘At the Edge of Land’ delves into the intricate and often concealed relationships between landscapes and trade. The exhibition highlights unexpectedly interconnected geographies, resources and commodities, moving between land and sea to tell stories of conflict, erosion and extraction. It challenges ideas of emptiness and development, shedding light on the regions and people on the margins of trade routes.
‘At the Edge of Land’ features works from the Art Jameel Collection together with loans and new commissions by international artists. The exhibition originated at Hayy Arts, Jeddah, and the selection of artists and artworks presented traces the trade routes on which both Dubai and Jeddah are located – the busy maritime path connecting East Asia and Europe via the Gulf, the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.
