‘The Distance from Here’ Film Programme

Gallery 9’s film programme is curated in conjunction with the exhibition, ‘The Distance from Here’, currently on display at Jameel Arts Centre on Level 1 until January 22, 2022. Focusing on similar themes, the films explore personal responses to and interactions with space and time. The programme features works by Bani Abidi, Mohamed Soueid and Mohammad Alfaraj.

Glimpses of Now is a visual and auditory exploration of the cities and people of Saudi Arabia. Mohammad Alfaraj shot the video in a documentary format using a video camera and mobile phone. This is an ongoing project, and the artist has been gathering footage for the film since 2015.

About Mohammad Alfaraj 

Mohammad Alfaraj (b.1993, lives and works in Al Hassa, KSA) grew up in Al Hassa, a remote town in Saudi Arabia that influenced his interest in nature and ecology. Working with video, photography, installation and writing, Alfaraj’s work often presents a world on the verge of collapse. Interested in the relationship between form and concepts, he incorporates stories, fiction and non-fiction into his work.

Alfaraj graduated with a BA in mechanical engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in 2017. His recent solo show took place at Athr Gallery, Jeddah (2020), and group shows include 21,39 Jeddah Arts, 2020; Athr Gallery, Jeddah, 2020; and the Sharjah Islamic Festival, 2019. His work has also been shown at the Sharjah Art Foundation; Le Murate Pac, Florence, 2019; Athr Gallery, Jeddah, 2018; 21,39 Jeddah Arts, 2017 & 2019; Saudi Film Festival, Dammam, 2015 and Dubai International Film Festival, 2014.
