Jameel Arts Centre holds together a series of tours and workshops for teens. The workshops feature a guided tour of the galleries and a discovery journey of artworks followed by creative hands-on activities, unique to each visit and led by artists and educators.
Sessions are free-to-attend with advance registration required. Register by emailing learning@artjameel.org. Limited spaces are available.
Led by Khalid Mezaina and inspired by the artists’ interpretations and use of patterns in the works displayed in Jameel Prize 5, participants in this workshop learn about pattern-making and T-shirt printing. Focusing on the works created by artists Hayv Kahraman, naqsh collective and Hala Kaiksow, participants reflect on self-identity through symbols and motif making. By printing these patterns through stamp making and stencilling, the end result is a collection of visually exciting tees that are unique to their maker, visually representing themselves through the patterns adorned on their indentiTEE!
Key workshop takeaways focus on looking at art but also on making and reflecting.
Khalid Mezaina joined the art world working as a graphic designer and programme coordinator for UAE based organisations – Sharjah Art Foundation and Tashkeel. With his experiences he began his own personal practise, focusing on illustration and surface based design and art in 2010. His commissioned and self-initiated projects range from prints, installations and murals, to designs for publications, stationary, packaging and textiles.
Khalid has participated in exhibitions, projects, workshops and residencies both in the UAE and abroad, sharing his knowledge on print based creative practises. Along with a BS in Visual Communication from the American University of Sharjah in 2006, Khalid graduated in 2018 from the Rhode Island School of Design, with an MFA in Textiles.
