Themed around migration, this edition of Poetry in the Park brings together poets in a special evening of spoken word against the backdrop of the Creek at Jaddaf Waterfront Sculpture Park. Done in collaboration with Backyard Poetry, the programme presents work that has been developed in a workshop that is inspired by Chiharu Shiota’s piece, Departure. Performers include commissioned poets Salma Alwi, Mohammed Tareq Anis, Mehran Azzam, Khalid Bilal, Arafa Al Mughairi and Jorge Monterossa. This event is part of the Jameel’s series, Performance in the Park.
Attendance is free and open to all. Attendees are encouraged to bring cushions to make the outdoor seating cosy.
Backyard Poetry is a community initiative built with the intent to provide a platform for UAE- based poets to showcase their talents and share their stories. Founded by Safwa Hashim and Qutouf Yahia, Backyard also commits to creating a multicultural community for poets and poetry-enthusiasts where they can share their experiences through their creative interactions with one another. Backyard has activated events and workshops in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, London, Khartoum and Doha and is always looking to move poetry through geography and borders.
