Madeeh is a tradition of devotional singing practised across the SWANA region and beyond, with roots stretching back to the early centuries of Islam. Carried through oral transmission across generations, it encompasses a vast and varied body of poetry and song dedicated to the Prophet Muhammad and the divine. Across different communities and geographies, it takes distinct forms; from the qasida and muwashshah traditions of North Africa and the Levant to the percussion-driven gatherings of the Nile Valley. In Sudan, the practice draws on centuries of devotional poetry, much of it composed by revered religious scholars and performed in Arabic and sometimes in regional languages.
Join us for an evening with Majlis KaramAllah, who bring this living practice to Jameel Arts Centre in celebration of Eid al-Adha. The ensemble will perform a repertoire drawn from the Sudanese Madeeh tradition for a beautiful evening of rhythm and community.
